People are passing away every day and many of them now-a-days have no local church relationship. The family has no pastoral connection, but they believe they are Christians, or at least they believe that the decedent was a Christian. There is a very large need for chaplaincy to the family of unchurched decedents. Often cremation has been ordered by the family, but they desire a memorial service prior to or following the cremation in order to honor their kin.
Funeral directors need to have a list of available chaplains available for families and also those who would perform indigent funerals at no cost. This is a tremendous way to grow community relationship and to seed referrals for other ministry that you provide. Initially, the focus on the remaining family is for needed grief counseling. However, other family issues may be present, connected with the death or not, that can be met by a Funeral Chaplain. Their ministerial credentials are absolutely necessary in these cases, since the families have no knowledge of the chaplain or his standing as a minister.
