Campground Chaplain

Home on the Range was a song a century ago: I remember it from my childhood.  Today Home in My RV is very popular for those who are not bound by a job somewhere.  Although chaplaining in an RV park is seasonal in most parts of the country, it can be very fruitful when the congregation is in town.  It is a chaplain role, because it is more than a Sunday morning preaching event.

A campground chaplain has park permission to walk through the park and welcome the newcomers and speak to people about their faith.  He or she may pray for people, minister to their spiritual needs and invite them to the Sunday morning service.  He or she may also schedule an evening around the campfire for additional spiritual input and encouragement to the temporary residents at the park.

Remember, these people, for the most part are not in a hurry and are happy to sit and talk.  If you are a trained counselor, present yourself with a business card and a brochure.  Let people know that you are available by appointment.  Place your business card on the central bulletin board where the mail delivery is.  Also, place a rack with your brochures somewhere near to coffee pot or near the mail pickup location, with a clear note that you are available right there in the park by appointment.  Develop a relationship with the guests in your park or campground quickly, that you may provide everything that was available back home, to them right there where they are.

The key principle in all of this is the scripture in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with your always, even to the end of the age.”  This is all about taking the ministry to the people, instead of expecting them to come to you.  The ministry of Jesus Christ is a going ministry, not a centralized exclusive ministry.

The National Conservative Christian Church will endorse and provide ordination, licensing or commissioning to adequately and properly trained candidates.
